The United States Marine Corps Birthday is observed annually on November 10.
The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States Armed Forces, is responsible for providing power protection from the sea using the mobility of the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. The Continental Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1975, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on land and at sea.
The birth of the U.S. Marine Corps began as a way to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. The recruiting headquarters was in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines.
The Corps was abolished at the end of the Revolutionary War. However, on July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the creation of the Corps, named it the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy.
The USMC shares many resources with the other branches of the United States military. However, the Corps has sought to maintain its own identity with regards to mission, funding and assets while utilizing the support available from the larger military branches. While the Marine Corps does have fewer installations than other branches, many Army posts, Naval stations and Air Force bases have a Marine presence.
In his birthday greeting more than 70 years ago, General Alexander Vandegrift, our 18th Commandant noted that "A birthday is a fitting time to peer backward – and forward." That year, Marines reflected on an extraordinary year in combat during their amphibious drive across the Pacific. Despite the challenges and the horrific conditions, Marines prevailed at Guam, Saipan, and Peleliu. On 10 November 1944, Marines looked back with pride on their accomplishment – confident in their ability to meet future challenges.

Southeast High School Students Gear-Up for MoDOT?s 13th Annual Bridge Building Competition
Competition Nov. 17 at Cape West 14 Cine
After weeks of work to build the most efficient model bridges, Southeast Missouri high school students are now gearing-up to put their bridges to the test. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will test bridges entered into its 13th Annual Bridge Building Competition Thursday, Nov. 17 at Cape West 14 Cine, located at 247 Siemers Drive in Cape Girardeau.
Doors will open at 8 a.m., with the competition beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at approximately 2 p.m.
The competition challenges high school juniors and seniors to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials—15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.
“We are very pleased to have over 40 area schools participating in this year’s competition,” said Senior Highway Designer Anita Clark. “In addition to giving students a great opportunity to learn about engineering, participating schools can also win prizes.”
Prizes donated by area businesses and organizations will be awarded to the top-five bridge building winners, as well as for the most aesthetic bridge and the electronic bridge building contest. Similar to previous years, cash prizes donated by the SE Chapter Transportation Employee Association of Missouri will be given to the top three schools with the best overall performance.
Prize donations and supply sponsorships have been made possible by the following businesses and organizations: SE Chapter Transportation Employee Association of Missouri, Cape West 14 Cine, Three Rivers Community College, Cape Area Engineers Club, Southeast Physics & Engineering Club, Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, Papa John’s, Pepsi Mid-America and the Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety.
Prizes donated by area businesses and organizations will be awarded to the top bridge building winners. In addition, MoDOT has partnered with Arkansas State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Missouri-Columbia and Southern Illinois University to offer seniors interested in civil engineering up to $10,000 in scholarships.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Southeast Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety will be on hand during the competition to discuss the importance of buckling-up with the Seat Belt Convincer, which simulates how it feels to be in a traffic crash.
Dexter, Missouri - The Dexter Police Department was awarded a contract/grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division which was effective from 10/01/2015 to 09/30/2016. The purpose of this grant was to conduct aggressive patrols and sobriety checkpoints to deter impaired driving. This grant also covered officer’s salaries to travel to other jurisdictions to conduct sobriety checkpoints as part of the Southeast Missouri DWI Task Force operation. This grant was approved in the amount of $11,847.
During these overtime projects, Dexter Police Officers worked a total of 129 hours and made contact with 530 motorists during roving patrols and one sobriety checkpoint conducted in the City limits of Dexter.
