In Memory of Johnny “Jay” Eugene Daniels

Johnny “Jay” Eugene Daniels, son of the late Johnnie F. Daniels and Bernice Henson Daniels, was born on May 15, 1947, in Parma, Missouri, and departed this life on May 28, 2022, at the John J Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, at the age of 75 years.

Mr. Daniels was a Veteran of the United States Army and a resident of Bloomfield, Missouri. He owned and operated several Auto Body Shops until his retirement in 2010. After his retirement, he enjoyed drag racing, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his long-time companion, Melissa England of Bloomfield, Missouri; by two daughters, Ashley Faries (Mike) of Dexter, Missouri, and Roni England (Derek) of Bloomfield, Missouri; by his brother, Tommy Daniels (Sharon) of Parma, Missouri; by four grandchildren, Jay-Thomas Marron, Roan Marron and Blakley Marron all of Dexter, Missouri; and Ryker Dale of Bloomfield, Missouri.

Other than by his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Irvin Daniels.

In Memory of Wilma Arcena McGowen

Wilma Arcena McGowen, 97, of Puxico, Missouri went to be with the Lord May 26, 2022, at Auburn Creek Assisted Living in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Wilma was born October 06, 1924 in Puxico, Missouri to the late Audrey Azel Allen and Dena Ann Hickman Allen.

She was united in marriage to Hubert “Dude” McGowen on December 05, 1940 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Wilma was a member of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church for 84 years, serving as clerk, Sunday School Teacher and many other areas.  She played the piano entirely by ear, which she considered her heavenly gift.  Wilma enjoyed gardening and brightening lives with her beautiful flowers.  She loved quilting with her mother, and her children and grandchildren were gifted with special wedding quilts.

She is survived by two sons Jummy (Marsha) McGowen of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Terry (Trish) McGowen of Puxico, Missouri; six grandchildren Brian (Peggy) McGowen of Puxico, Missouri, Drs. Sarah (Roy) Phillips of Lexington, South Carolina, Nan (Brad) Beaird of Columbia, Missouri, Brandon (Krystal) McGowen of Puxico, Missouri, Eric (Kristi) McGowen of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Julie (Aaron) Kuehle of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; twelve great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents Audrey and Dena Allen; husband Hubert “Dude” McGowen; one son Dr. Sammy H. McGowen and three brothers Ralph, Everett and Elmer Allen.  A host of family and friends also survive.  

Visitation will be on Thursday June 02, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico, Missouri.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday June 02, 2022  at 1:00 p.m. at Watkins and Sons Funeral Chapel in Puxico, Missouri with Rev. Gary Burns officiating and Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.

Interment will follow directly after the service at Duck Creek Cemetery in Puxico, Missouri.

In Memory of Mark Anthony Curran

Mark Anthony Curran, son of Barbara and David Curran of Chesterfield, Missouri was born on February 19, 1969, in St. Louis, Missouri. He departed this life on May 26, 2022, at the age of 53.

Mark is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ambre Curran of 29 years; children Zach and wife Amanda Curran, Madalyn and husband Alan Lockhart, and Jacob Curran; mother and father Barbara and David Curran; sibling David Curran and wife Michelle Curran; niece Maggie Curran and nephew Andrew and his wife Kailee Curran; sister-in-law Rhonda Curran; brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Lauren Starks and nephews Maurice, Colton, and Camden Starks; as well as his father and mother-in-law David and Cathy Mathis and several loving lifelong friends and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his sister Michele Curran, brother Steven Curran and nephew Xaiden Starks.

Mark Curran studied at Southeast Missouri University for his Bachelors degree and at East Central University to receive his masters. He worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor for 20 years and he loved helping others.

Mark loved to cheer on the Blues and Cardinals. He was very active in his Fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and enjoyed spending time with his brothers. He had a big heart for animals and loved to spend time outside with his dogs. His most favorite of all was spending time with his wife and kids. He will be forever remembered to many as the strongest person they knew and how he always lived his life to the fullest every single day.

Family Visitation will be held at the Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. The family is honoring Mark's wishes and is having a celebration of life at the River Ridge Winery in Scott City for family and friends on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 1:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made through the Mark Curran’s trust fund through Commerce Bank to help with medical expenses. In Memory of Rev. Donald Vernon Wells

Rev. Donald Vernon Wells, son of the late Charles Donald Wells and Jeri Thornton Wells was born on April 11, 1940, in Mattoon, Illinois, and went to his heavenly home on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing in Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 82 years.

On August 22, 1964, in Mattoon, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Donna Decker and from there the journey began. After surrendering to the call of God upon his life he and Donna sold everything they had and made their way to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Rev. Wells attended the Nazarene Bible College. After graduating seminary and for the next 46 years they committed to serving in pastoral ministry for various churches in Missouri and Illinois. He pastored the Nazarene Church in Bernie, Missouri, for almost 20 years and then after retiring he served as pastor of the Corner Gospel Church in Bernie, Missouri for another 7 years. After his second retirement he helped his son pastor at the First Pentecostal Church of Dexter, Missouri, where he was a member.

He loved being with his family and following a variety of sports. In his younger years Rev. Wells was also an avid runner. And the pride of his life were his six grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Wells and wife Christy of Dexter, Missouri, and Jeff Wells and wife Tera of Dexter, Missouri; by his daughter, Jenny Wells of Bernie, Missouri; by his two brothers Steve Wells and wife Kathy of Aurora, Colorado, and Kenny Wells and wife Eileen of Phoenix, Arizona; by his four sisters, Judy Ingram of Palatine, Illinois, Carol Claxon and husband Roger of Champaign, Illinois, Marsha Dawson of Charleston, Illinois, and Jeri Kurkul of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; by his four granddaughters, Macie Wells, Taylor Montgomery and husband Brett, Kaeli Wells, Mikalyn Kirkwood; by his two grandsons, Riley Wells and Tyler Wells.

Other than by his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, David Wells and Jimmy Wells.

Visitation will be held at Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie on Thursday, June 2, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will then be conducted in the Mathis Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 3, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Harper and Rev. Jeff Wells officiating.

Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery in Bernie.

Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter is assisting with arrangements.
