Mules Beat Holcomb in Five Innings

Bernie, Missouri - The Mules took the sting out of the Hornets on Friday evening beating Holcomb 13-3 in five innings.

Fifth inning runs put the nail in the coffee when the Mules earned six runs scoring on an RBI single by Alex Guzman, a walk by Nate Dillinger, a stolen home by Wyatt Barnett, a sacrifice fly by Jayce Burk and an error.

Bernie jumped out to an early lead in the first inning scoring on a Jayce Burk single. He stole 2nd base and finally rounded the bases for home. 

The Hornets scored three runs taking the lead; but the Mules kicked it up a notch and managed to grab the lead back in a strong fourth inning show.  They went up for good on a two-run double by Dillinger off Josh Watson (Hornets Pitcher) bring home Corbin Hunt and Alex Guzman.  Dillinger racked up three RBIs on one hit.

Dalton Hobgood got the win for the Bernie Mules varsity.  He allowed three runs over five innings, struck out four, walked one and surrendered six hits.

Watson of Holcomb was charged with the loss. He allowed 13 runs in four inning, walked three and struck out only one Mule.
 
The Bernie Mules will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the Campbell Camels at 4:30 p.m.

Mules Squeak Past Royals for the Win

Bernie, Missouri - The Mules varsity baseball team outlasted Twin Rivers on Monday squeaking out a 5 - 3 win at home.

Senior Jayce Burk lead the way for the Mules with a three RBI day.

Twin Rivers grabbed the early lead in the top of the first when LeGrand kicked things off with a single.  Bernie bounced back to go up 2 - 1 in the third by scoring sophomore Wyatt Barnett and senior Corbin Hunt.

Royals then went back ahead in the 5th from a 2-run by LeGrand to make it a 3 - 2 game.

The Mules rallied back in the 6th scoring junior Weston Comstock, Barnett, and Burk.  Comstock lead things off with a  lead-off single.  Barnett and Burk followed with singles of their own.  An error on a Gavin Brown (junior) hit and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Josh Ellenburg lead to Bernie finally taking the lead 5 - 3.

Bernie didn't give up the lead after the 6th inning.  Alex Guzman (senior) closed out the game for the Mules to earn the save.  Blake Beacham got the win for Bernie. He allowed three runs over six innings, striking out one, walked two, and surrendered six hits.

LeGrand took the loss for Twin Rivers.  He walked one, struck out six, and allowed five runs.

Bernie will be back in action on Wednesday, August 31st when they host the Bell City Cubs.  Game time 4:30 pm

ShowMe Times Sports Spotlight - Jason Jarrell

Dexter, Missouri - The ShowMe Times Dexter Athlete Spotlight shines on Jason Jarrell.

Jason is a 6’ 0” 170 lbs. RB/FS and #10 on the Dexter Bearcat Football team and is a senior at the Dexter High School.

He is the son of Dennis and Paula Jarrell. His grandmother is Alice Jarrell.  

Jarrell is a member of the Dexter Honor Society and has also joined Sr. Beta Club, a new club at Dexter High School.

Jason has won the American Legion Award for Outstanding Male Student at the Dexter High School for 2013, Top 10% all years of high school, and Honor Roll all semesters. Jason is the 2016 National I Dare You Award winner for Dexter High School.

In 2014 and 2015 he won both the Academic All-State Football award and the Perryville Character Athlete award for basketball. He was awarded All Conference SEMO Conference Baseball First Team Catcher 2016, All District Baseball Class 4 2016, Dexter Baseball Team MVP 2016, Dexter baseball Team Batting Award 2016, All Conference SEMO Central Football Offense and Defense 2014, All Conference SEMO Central Football Offense 2015, All Conference SCAA Basketball 2015 and 2016, Stoddard County All-Tournament Basketball Team 2015 and 2016, Bloomfield Christmas Tournament All-Tournament Team 2014 and 2015. Jarrell is a back to back Fellowship of Christian Athletes Dodgeball Champion.

He has lettered in varsity baseball, basketball, and football as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. Jarrell plans to play all three sports his senior year.

His future plans are to go to college. He enjoys hunting, fishing, baseball, basketball, and football. Outside of school Jarrell participated on the Charleston Fighting Squirrels Baseball Team.

He attends the Dexter United Methodist Church and is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

it takes a lot of determination to not only play three sports each year, but to achieve such a high academic status as well.  Jarrell is consistently improving not only his athletic talents on the field and court, but he is excelling in the classroom as well.

Mules Come From Behind to Beat Senath

Bernie, Missouri - The Bernie Mules baseball team under Coach Marcus Massey faced a tough opponent on Thursday afternoon.  Down 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th, the Mules kicked into gear to score 3 runs to tie and then scored one in the bottom of the 8th for the hard earned win!

Senath-Hornersville scored a run in the top of the 1st inning.  Blake Beacham (junior) answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd for Bernie.

The Lions then scored three runs in the 3rd until the 7th when the Mules earned a single, a walk, a hit batsman and a throwing error on Senath filled the bases.  Wyatt Barnett (sophomore), Bernie, squeezed the third run home in the bottom of the 7th.  Dalton Hobgood (junior) drove in the tying run sending the game into extra innings.

Jayce Burck (senior) who led the Mules with 3 hits, singled with one out in the 7th.  He also stole second and then scored from there when Alex Guzman's (senior) grounder up the middle was thrown wild to first base.

Wyatt Barnett (sophomore) pitched the first 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs, three earned.  He struck-out 9 and walked 5.

Corbin Hunt (senior) got the win in relief, pitching the 8th inning and allowing zero hits, while striking out two.

Barnett had 2 hits and Dalton Hobgood had one hit.

The Mules (2-1) host Holcomb and Bloomfield on Saturday, August 27th in their annual Wood-Bat Round Robin.

Bernie Mules Slam Naylor in 10 Run Rule

Bernie, Missouri - The Bernie Mules had little trouble out of Naylor on Wednesday, August 24th. Blake Beacham got the win in 5 innings on a 10-run rule.

The Mules jumped out to an early lead from a Gavin Brown (junior) single to start the inning followed by an Alex Guzman (senior) reaching by base-on-balls.  This led to both guys scoring in the second inning.

The Naylor Eagles scored their first run in the 4th after an error by Bernie third baseman, followed by another error by Mules right fielder that eventually led to a run.

Bernie responded in the bottom of the 4th by scoring 6 runs.  It started off by a lead off double by Jayce Burk (senior) followed by a wild pitch.  Guzman sacrificed to start the inning off.  Burk, Josh Ellenburg (sophomore), and Dalton Hobgood (junior) all recorded hits in the 4th.

Mules #6 senior Guzman lead off the 5th with a double to left field, followed by an Ellenburg ground ball to third reaching safely on an error.  Guzman was eventually thrown out going home, but Ellenburg scored in the 5th on a grounder by Hobgood.

Naylor added one more run in the 6th off a one out single by Ward.  Followed by a fielders choice then a double by Jones.

Bernie went on to score three more runs in the 6th on a lead-off single by Gavin Brown (junior) followed by Burk, Guzman, and Ellenburg reaching base-on walks.  Brown scored on a walk.  Burk scored on a wild pitch.  Guzman scored on a single Kade Burk (freshman) to left field to score the winning run.

"Today was better.  We definitely walked out of here feeling better because of scored runs today," commented head baseball coach Marcus Massey.  "Over all it was pretty good.  Still have a few things we need to clean up, but I think we are headed in the right direction."

"It's early and there is a lot of baseball left this fall so we shall see," continued Massey.
