St. Mary's HS Football Has Been Added to Class 3, District 1

Dexter, MO - This year has been completely unique when it comes to sports.  The Missouri State High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA) has been monitoring fall sports on a week by week basis to help navigate around COVID-19.

Prior to this press release the following schools were in the Bearcat's district: Dexter, Doniphan, Fredericktown, Kennett, STe. Genevieve and Valle Catholic.

Below is a press release regarding Class 3, District 1 and 2 assignments for football.

"Since the release of Class and District assignments, the MSHSAA Board of Directors has received written request from two schools requesting to participate in the traditional fall football season after previously declaring for the alternate fall season. This type of request was one of which the staff and board of directors knew was a possibility. The two requests have been approved by the board of directors which results in adding two schools (St. Mary's (SL) and Cardinal Ritter) to the postseason for the fall season."

"Based on enrollment and/or championship factor, both schools fall into Class 3. The determining factors for the district that these schools are assigned to was as follows: (1) which districts could still take on a additional team and maintain numerical balance with other districts in the state (no district greater than 7 schools in the district) (2) consideration of geographical location. St. Mary's HS was the southernmost school of the two schools and District 1 could take on an additional team; therefore, they have been assigned to District 1. Cardinal Ritter was north of St. Mary's and District 2 could take on an additional team; therefore, they have been assigned to District 2. District 3 was already at 7 schools and could not take on an additional team(s) without being out of numerical balance with other districts in Class 3."

Respectfully, Greg Stahl MSHSAA Assistant Executive Director

Rachel Blunt Named Interim Athletic Director

While Central Michigan searches for a permanent replacement for Michael Alford, an interim athletic director has been named.

Rachel Blunt, formerly the senior associate athletics director of institutional support services and senior women's administrator, has been tabbed for the job by CMU president Bob Davies on Aug. 27.

Blunt will officially take the job over on Aug. 31.

"As a leader in multiple areas of CMU Athletics, Rachel is ideally suited and prepared to step into this interim role," Davies said in an athletic department press release. "Her breadth of experience will bring the necessary leadership and enable a seamless transition."

Blunt came to CMU in 2016 from Southeast Missouri State, where she was an assistant director of athletics for compliance. She leads various areas within the Chippewa athletic department, ranging from the university's Fire Up Program to compliance and development programs.

"Athletics are a vital part of life at CMU," Blunt said in the release. "I'm honored president Davies has looked to me to take on this position and look forward to helping our department and our university meet challenges and embrace new opportunities."

Alford announced in July he is leaving CMU to become the CEO of Seminole Boosters at Florida State University. Alford leaves the program after achieving success in fundraising for improvements to Kelly/Shorts Stadium, including the new video board and the Chippewa Champions Center.

As part of his announcement, Alford said he will aid Davies and the committee to find his successor.

The search for a permanent candidate is being led by university provost Mary Schutten. Blunt is part of the search committee, as are former CMU football coach Herb Deromedi, women's track and field athlete Marissa Dunn, alumnus Ronald Ekdahl, former athletes Mike Franckowiak and Reyna Frost, faculty member Alyssa Lucas, junior wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton, CMU Alumni Association president Nathan Tallman and ceremonies and events coordinator Kyle Pybus-Jerome.
