Lunch Menu Input Solicited from PBHS Students

Lunch Menu Input Solicited from PBHS Students
Chartwells School Dining Services hosted a series of taste tests last week at Poplar Bluff High School in an effort to receive student input on potential menu items.

Students chose from a chicken BLT salad or a Buffalo chicken salad on Tuesday, March 5, and Korean chicken bulgogi or a chicken fried rice bowl the following day in the cafeteria, then voted for which meal they liked the best.

“These are things they choose, not us,” explained Dixie Harden, food services director. “We get their input and [create] recipes that fall within the nutritional guidelines.”

PBHS is one of three educational partners in Missouri selected to experiment with the Student Choice program through the vendor. Food service employees previously set up a taste test in November featuring burgers.

Harden said a permanent Student Choice line may be established next academic year at the High School serving regular lunch items built around feedback, with more periodical samplings.

TRC Selects Todd Richardson as 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient
Three Rivers College selects Todd Richardson as the recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award

Three Rivers College has selected Todd Richardson to receive its 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award. A public reception in his honor will be held at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on Friday, April 5, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

“Todd has made many contributions to Three Rivers College and the region that will benefit our students and constituents for many years to come,” said Dr. Wesley Payne, President of Three Rivers College. “We are honored that he got his start at Three Rivers and continues to be invested in our success.”

Richardson, a Poplar Bluff native, currently serves as the Director of MO HealthNet. Prior to that appointment, he was Speaker of the House for the State of Missouri. In his role in Missouri government, he helped secure funding and recruited legislators to make the new Excel Center in Poplar Bluff possible. Richardson was also responsible for securing funding for the Crisp Technology Center expansion on the Three Rivers campus.

Each year, Three Rivers takes students to the Capitol for Community College Week. During his time in the House of Representatives, Richardson would invest extra time in the students, taking them to the House floor and allowing them to sit at representatives’ desks to learn about government.

“When I learned I would be receiving this award, I was thrilled,” said Richardson. “To be named a Distinguished Alumni at Three Rivers College, in my hometown, is a huge honor.”

Richardson has been honored with the Missouri Community College Association’s Legislative Award of Distinction and several other awards.

In addition to attending Three Rivers College, Richardson taught Business Law and Government classes as an adjunct instructor.

“Todd has been a staunch supporter of Three Rivers College for many years,” said Michelle Reynolds, Director of Development for Three Rivers. “He is, deservedly, well-respected in this community, and we are proud to honor him with this award.”

In addition to receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award, Richardson has been selected as the Keynote Speaker for the Three Rivers 2019 Commencement ceremony, which will be May 17th at the Libla Family Sports Complex.

Those wishing to attend the April 5 recognition reception should RSVP to Michelle Reynolds at michellereynolds@trcc.edu or 573-840-9077.

Three Rivers College Enhances Welding Program with Virtual Welding Machines

Three Rivers College Enhances Welding Program with Virtual Welding Machines
Three Rivers College recently added virtual welding machines to its Welding program, located at Three Rivers – Dexter. The virtual welding machines offer a realistic way for students to practice welding in a controlled environment.

“When the students put on the virtual welding helmets, their experience is incredibly close to actual welding,” said Derek Joplin, Three Rivers College Welding Instructor. “The electrode retracts like the rod does with real welding, and the students see the molten pool and sparks.”

Being able to practice welding virtually is especially beneficial to those without any previous welding experience. It’s also cost-effective because it allows students to practice without using expensive materials.

“These virtual machines will help us keep costs down for our welding students, while letting them build their welding skills,” said Joplin.

Individual profiles in the welding system allow students to do assignments, take exams, view their results, and even do live replays of their welds.

“Our welding programs offer an efficient and affordable gateway into a high-demand career,” said Dr. Dan Lauder, Chair of Career Studies and Workforce Development at Three Rivers. “In as little as a year, a student in these programs can be ready to apply for well-paying welding jobs anywhere in the nation.”

Students in Three Rivers’ welding programs in Dexter can obtain a one-year certificate in Welding Fabrication or Maintenance Welding, or a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology – Welding Option.

There are 13 students currently enrolled in the TRC Welding program, with a maximum of 15 spots available. Spring welding classes are underway, but classes will begin again in Fall 2019.

Current Three Rivers students can register for Fall classes starting March 18, and registration is open for all on April 1. Prospective students can visit trcc.edu or call 573-840-9605 for more information on all of Three Rivers’ programs of study. To apply for admission to Three Rivers, visit trcc.edu/admissions. Prospective students must possess a high school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

Three Rivers College is committed to contributing to the quality of life in Southeast Missouri with quality, affordable higher education opportunities and community services that support and encourage the economic, civic, and cultural vitality of the region.
